Earlier today, Fox announced that Shane Black would be directing a reboot for the ’80s classic Predator, and now MGM has revealed plans for another ’80s reboot- Wargames. Dean Israelite will be directing the film and Arash Amel will be penning the script.

Israelite previously directed a couple short films, and his first feature length project, Project Almanac, is set to come out in January.  That movie happens to be a found footage time travel film produced by Michael Bay, so…yeah.

Arash Amel wrote the screenplay for the largely panned Grace of Monaco with Nicole Kidman, and will be working on the script for I Am Legend 2.

While Predator is a franchise that lends itself to the possibility of a solid sequel or reboot, do we really need another Wargames?  Wasn’t the charm of the original the fact that it took place in the ’80s, during a time when personal computing was in its infancy?

You might also remember that a sequel was already made back in 2008 called Wargames: The Dead Code.  That was a straight to video catastrophe and something tells me this reboot won’t be much better.  That is unless they set it in the ’90s and have Matthew Broderick battling Angelina Jolie and Jonny Lee Miller for the title of hacker supreme.  Or maybe they can all team up with Sandra Bullock from The Net in order to take down Fisher Stevens as The Plague.

Now that’s the kind of Wargames I’d like to see.
