‘Amour’ Wins Palme d’Or at Cannes 2012

Writer, director Michael Haneke‘s latest offering, Amour, was just awarded with the prestigious Palme d’Or, the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival. Haneke is one of only a handful of people that won the award more than once, his first being for 2009’s The White RibbonAmour stars Jean-Louis Trintignant and Emmanuelle Riva as Georges and Anne, a retired couple who were both music teachers.  The two have a daughter, played by Isabelle Huppert, and when Anne encounters a health problem, the bonds of the family become tested.

The film is a French-Austrian production and it’s suspected that it will become Austria’s submission for Best Foreign Language Film at this year’s Oscars. It was picked up by Sony Pictures Classics, however there is currently no US release date.

  1. I read online that it should be released in December of this year.  I am fanatical about Haneke’s films; he’s obviously one of the best directors in the world.  Either version of FUNNY GAMES, THE CASTLE, THE PIANO TEACHER, CACHE, and THE WHITE RIBBON.  Just how many brilliant, must-see films can one man make?  He’s a miraculous genius.

    •  lol you should listen to our podcast sometime, Kevin really doesn’t like Haneke

      • Well, Ryan and I need to get together and discuss.  I’ll certainly look for the podcast where Haneke is mentioned.  We may not be able to persuade one another, but I’m sure it would be entertaining to try.

        • It’s true that I do not like Haneke, but I am going to give him another try. “Amour” actually looks and sounds like I will enjoy it. I must say that I do respect Haneke, but what I have seen so far was wretched.

Ha, I think wretched may be a little strong, I was into Funny Games till the very end, and I’d give The White Ribbon another shot, but since I only saw those two, I’m not sure I can judge him.

One thing that can be said, he definitely seems like a love him or hate him type of guy.

I just realized that I mistakenly referred to “Ryan” instead of “Kevin.”  My apologies to both.
