For those of you uninitiated, back in 2015 there was a little film that came out about an alcoholic police officer who, after becoming the subject of a satanic ritual, became a werewolf…a WolfCop if you will. Now, after learning to harness his lycan powers to thwart evil in his town, Wolfcop is back in Lowell Dean’s Another Wolfcop, a bigger, crazier and more explosive film that checks all the boxes a sequel of this ilk should.
Having felt a bit lukewarm on the original, I went into the newly released Blu-ray with few expectations other than more of the same irreverent, juvenile humor and over-the-top gore. Indeed those things are present in spades, but Another Wolfcop benefits from a bigger budget this time around, allowing for more action, more explosions and loads more practical creature effects, including a werecat.
While the sequel does an adequate job of expanding the Wolfcop universe, it only delivers the bare minimum amount of plot, instead focusing on one ridiculous sequence of violence after the next, most assuredly setting itself up for a another sequel to wrap up the story. For those who haven’t seen the original, it’s not a hard prerequisite to enjoy Another Wolfcop, but considering this builds heavily off the first, I would recommend getting caught up before diving into this one.
Despite its bigger budget, however, the film retains its scrappy, low-budget vibe, channeling studios like Troma (but far better) or Astron-6 (who have a lovely cameo in the opening action sequence). The gore effects are plentiful, very gross and done completely practically – no cheap-looking CG here, just gallons of blood and viscera.
Regarding the features of the Blu-ray release, there’s a very short making-of that doesn’t amount to much, cast interviews, featurettes on the effects work of the film, insights into the 17-day shoot for the film and a music video. By and large, this is a paltry amount of bonus content, with each feature only lasting a few minutes, but what’s here is enjoyable.
Another Wolfcop outdoes the first entry in nearly every way, delivering a fun, silly, crass, B-movie experience, but this is a film that seems better suited for a Netflix watch than a Blu-ray purchase. Perhaps a third entry will win me over, but as of now, Wolfcop still isn’t my thing.
