When first opening Gallery 1988’s Crazy4Cult Cult Movie Art 2, it quickly becomes clear that this is an art book that was designed specifically for me.  With each page turn I found myself becoming more and more enthralled, amused, and delighted at what I was seeing.  With most gallery shows there’s a handful of great pieces among a sea of mediocrity, however nearly every masterfully crafted item in this book knocks it out of the park.

For a fan of cult movies, this book is simply a must have.  It honors not only the mainstream hits like The Big Lebowski and Donnie Darko, but also features some fantastic pieces for films like Welcome to the Dollhouse, The Burbs, and even the BMX classic Rad.

‘Portrait of an Iron Giant as Young Vin Diesel’ by Mike Mitchell

The artwork widely varies in style and technique, covering everything from oil and canvas, to sculpture, to even vinyl and plush.  With 133 artists featured, even when there are multiple pieces for one movie, they still each have their own voice.

The book itself is published by Titan Books, so if you’re familiar with their stuff you’ll know the high quality.  At 176 pages of pure glossy goodness, this will fit perfectly into anyone’s coffee table collection.  While it may seem like I am on their payroll, I’m not, I’m just really loving this book.

The layout is quite nice, ordering the films chronologically, and featuring most pieces on their own page.  The pages aren’t cluttered with verbiage either, keeping the captions small and to the point. If I have only one small nit pick, it would be that a movie index would be a nice touch.  If I want to return to the wonderful section of Wes Anderson pieces it would be cool not to have to go through the entire book, however doing this makes me find a few I forgot about, like the great Ferris Bueller piece by Sean Clarity, so in the end it works out.

Rounded out with a great introduction by Seth Rogen, this is an absolute must-have for all films nerds such as myself.  I would love to have every single one of this prints lining the walls of my home, even the ones for films I’m not crazy about.  Gallery 1988 has consistently proven themselves to be a powerhouse of the pop art world and they’ve outdone themselves this time, and I sincerely hope that they’ll keep it up forever and ever.
