A MUBI Release — Exclusive

Straight from its sleeper-hit theatrical release this summer, Ryuichi Sakamoto: Coda introduces the life and work of legendary Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto. From 80s pop stardom to award-winning winning composer — collaborating with directors like Bernardo Bertolucci, Brian De Palma, and Alejandro González Iñárritu — Sakamoto’s story is truly one of a kind. Named a Critic’s Pick by The New York Times and Official Selections of both the Venice and Tribeca Film Festivals, this intimate and moving portrait gives stunning insight into the creative mind of one of the most important artists of our era.

Bertrand Mandico Trio — Exclusive

MUBI is proud to present the debut feature by emerging French filmmaker Bertrand Mandico: The Wild Boys. The film, which premiered in the Venice Critics’ Week last year, follows five adolescent boys — all played by female actors — in a tale brimming with eroticism, gender fluidity, and humor. Two of Mandico’s shorts will precede this exclusive online premiere, giving audiences a chance to delve into this talented filmmaker’s unique, hyper-stylized body of work.

Retrospective: Kevin Jerome Everson — Exclusive

MUBI spotlights the fascinating and essential American director Kevin Jerome Everson, whose deeply personal, socially acute, culturally embedded and formally adventurous body of work has not been shown nearly as much as it should. The multi-disciplinary artist has been widely recognized by festivals (Toronto, Rotterdam, Visions du Reel) and arts institutions (Whitney Museum, Centre Pompidou) — and, with a filmography of more than 100 works, has created a sprawling body of cinema, bountiful in its observation of the black experience in America. MUBI is proud to present five features and two shorts spanning the career of this great American artist.

A True Original: Alberto Cavalcanti

One of the most talented craftsmen of his era, Brazilian filmmaker Alberto Cavalcanti was initially known for his avant-garde and documentary talents before turning to commercial filmmaking — making the majority of his films in Britain and France. This selection of eclectic films, ranging from a masterfully unpredictable wartime thriller to a stellar Dickens adaptation, prove he never turned his back on his pursuit of originality.

Global Exclusives

A landmark of the Japanese New Wave, Yoshishige Yoshida’s modernist epic Eros Plus Massacre charts two crucial moments of political upheaval in his country: the assassination-rife 1920s and the tumultuous 1960s. Featuring superstar actress (and Yoshida’s wife) Mariko Okada, and made in the director’s radical style, this is a rare classic that is both under-seen and still provocative.

Eros Plus Massacre — September 18 — Exclusive

Coinciding with this summer’s reunion tour of the beloved post-punk band “The The”, The Inertia Variations follows the band’s founder/singer/songwriter Matt Johnson, who was once pushed to a state of silence as a result of profound disenchantment with the world. MUBI presents this achingly intimate doc in honor of the band’s comeback 15 years later.

The Inertia Variations — September 29 — Exclusive

Chinese Independents, Part 2

Part two of MUBI’s tribute to the contemporary underground and independent cinema of China, shining a spotlight on the work of the brave filmmakers who often take incalculable risks in order to tell their stories. This second wave begins with Disorder, Huang Weikai’s disturbing, lyrical portrait of hell on earth, and closes with Wang Bing’s haunting, incisive documentary ‘Til Madness Do Us Part.
