  1. There are always movies that come up as soon as we finish recording. I started thinking of other movies that got alot of attention but that we didn’t discuss as a “best,” “honorable mention,” or disappointing. Daniel’s posted list does include LIFE OF PI which none of us thought to mention and how could we have forgotten it unless it just didn’t do much for us. I must say I was underwhelmed and though I haven’t read the supposedly unfilmable book, the movie produced makes me wonder just how filmable it ultimately was. I agree with Daniel that it has some of the year’s best visuals, but I would have preferred seeing the entire story (or most of it) on the water, meerkat island, etc., rather than having interruptions of grown-up Pi telling the tale to a writer.

Also absent was FLIGHT which got great reviews and is bringing Denzel Washington awards notice though I think his performance is nothing special and overrated. The first 20 minutes — the plane taking off, hitting the storm, flying upside down, and crashing — were exhilirating; from there, it descended into maudlin melodrama about addiction and redemption.

There was also Britain’s THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL which is also receiving some awards notice. I don’t know if anyone else saw it but me, but I enjoyed it for what it was, nothing more. We also failed to mention Seth MacFarlane’s directorial debut, the very funny TED which was one of the year’s best comedies even if it milked the same joke once too many times.
Finally, there is CLOUD ATLAS which appears on Daniel’s list. None of us mentioned it in the podcast. It wouldn’t be on any of my lists, but it was certainly an interesting experience to view it. Had it been commercially successful, I doubt year-end critics’ lists (maybe ours included) could have ignored it. Sadly, I think it was over too many people’s heads and they tried to hard to understand it rather than just sitting back and letting it wash over them.
