Despite having not a lot of new content, the fact that Criterion includes basically everything from all the other releases, including the now-rare Laserdisc, the new restoration and the wonderful packaging, makes this an easy recommend to anyone who grew up watching this magical, life-affirming film that will consistently make everyone’s day a little better.

Cold Water is an absorbing, pensive look at what such desires feel like on the inside, with its handheld close-ups on faces and careful observance at objects and structures, as if to seek answers from everything in equal measure.

A Matter of Life and Death is aesthetically and thematically governed by images of the planets and stars themselves, always greater than individual hangups.

As the Eric Hynes essay in the Criterion booklet astutely points out, it’s best to consider Moore’s films as a kind of dynamic presentation, mixing traditional storytelling techniques and operatic hellraising with the kind of infuriating horrors that can only come from simply discussing aspects of real life as they stand.

Based on the quality of the film and Criterion’s immaculate audio/visual exhibition, Moonrise is definitely recommended, I just wish there were more supplements to dive into.
A welcome addition to the Criterion library, The Virgin Suicides has all the makings of a true classic. It’s a timeless, beautifully executed story that now has the proper home release that it so sorely deserved.

Because this film is already so scantily seen, this Blu-ray release operates as its own historical object that contains enough content for you to understand why this film, of all the old Hollywood revues, got the Criterion treatment.

ltogether this is most definitely worthy of the Criterion treatment and shows off the artistry that decidedly belongs in the annals of Hollywood history.

If you haven’t seen, or if you want multiple ways to revisit the classic with pristine video and audio (or no audio at all), I can’t recommend Criterion’s The Passion of Joan of Arc Blu-ray highly enough.
