TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY Review

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is a star-studded movie adaptation of the famous 1974 British spy novel of the same name.  The story was also adapted into a television series starring Alec Guinness which ran as a seven-part mini-series on the BBC. Full disclosure for this review, I have not read the book nor have I viewed the TV series.

That being said, I really can’t imagine a seven-hour long version of this story.  Although the performances from the powerhouse cast are award-worthy (although being mysteriously snubbed from the Golden Globes), the story is very dry and may leave some viewers wanting more. That’s not to say this film isn’t suspenseful or well-crafted, just don’t expect a James Bond film.

All the actors in this film brought their A-game, especially Gary Oldman and Colin Firth, which was the film’s saving grace.

The camera work, costume, and set design was also spot-on. The entire film had that perfect early 70s spy flick feel to it.

Overall, I would say that this is a must-see film, although it’s not necessary to catch it while still in cinemas.  I would also be very surprised if this didn’t get nominated for some Academy Awards, they usually eat these kinds of movies up.
