Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight continues to add year-end accolades and is considered one of the Oscar front-runners. Jenkins has so far been singled out by the New York Film Critics Circle, the National Board of Review, and the Los Angeles Film Critics Association for his stellar direction.
The filmmaker recently tweeted out a link to his first short film, My Josephine, made in 2003, and it’s interesting to view it now post-Moonlight. The same absorbing style (with photography by Moonlight cinematographer James Laxton) is certainly evident. In the tweet, the director notes a “reminder to channel this energy, to create.” I’d say he’s doing a fine job of that.
