It’s tough to narrow it down to just five most anticipated films from this year’s Fantasia Festival in Montreal, but here’s my best attempt. With the lineup recently announced, there’s a metric ton of great genre cinema to choose from, but a number of entries stand out as must-sees.

Sadako by Hideo Nakata

I’m overjoyed to see Hideo Nakata coming back to the Ringu series in what I hope to be a revitalization of the franchise.

Critters Attack! by Bobby Miller

While I wasn’t too impressed with the recent TV series, I still love the Critters franchise and I’m hoping that Critters Attack! makes for a wonderful comeback of a series I really loved as a kid. Director Bobby Miller’s last feature, The Cleanse, was a fun little creature feature and after seeing that it’s clear why he was tapped to helm this one.

Extra Ordinary by Mike Ahern & Enda Loughman

Will Forte plays a washed up rockstar looking to sacrifice someone in order to renew his pact with Satan and is going up against a paranormal “sensitive” driving instructor. That’s all I need to know to be completely on board with this one.

Freaks by Zach Lipovsky & Adam B. Stein

Even after reading a bit about this one I feel like I have no idea what it’s about, which just intrigues me more. Plus, you have Bruce Dern playing an evil(?) ice cream man.

Ready or Not by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin & Tyler Gillett

This horror-comedy looks deliciously dark and very fun. I love movies that involve twisted games and it looks like this one definitely fits the bill.

Because there are so many titles I’m dying to see at this year’s festival I’d like to quickly list a few more to keep an eye on, namely Jovanka Vuckovic’s Riot Girls, Lorcan Finnegan‘s Vivarium, and Rob Grant‘s Harpoon.
