Arnold’s Back in the trailer for ‘The Last Stand’

Sure, we’ll get to see Arnold Schwarzenegger play another cameo in this week’s The Expendables 2, but that’s nothing compared to this, which is his first starring role since leaving politics. In The Last Stand, Arnold plays a small-town sheriff, tasked with stopping a drug cartel from passing through, on their way to Mexico. While the film doesn’t look anything more than mediocre, the biggest bit of intrigue to this, other than the return of Arnold, is the director, Kim Ji-woon. Ji-woon directed the outstandingly amazing South Korean film I Saw the Devil, as well as A Tale of Two Sisters, and The Good the Bad and The Weird. Unfortunately, we’ve seen great asian directors come to the states before, and completely muck things up- John Woo, Ang Lee, Ryûhei Kitamura, just to name a few. Here’s hoping this isn’t the case with Ji-woon, as I Saw the Devil still stands as one of my all-time favorite horror films.

Look for The Last Stand to hit theaters January 18th, 2013, here’s the trailer and synopsis:

Action icon Arnold Schwarzenegger makes his much-anticipated return to the big screen in Korean director Kim Jee-woon’s hard-hitting US directorial debut, THE LAST STAND. After leaving his LAPD narcotics post following a bungled operation that left him wracked with remorse and regret, Sheriff Ray Owens (Schwarzenegger) moved out of Los Angeles and settled into a life fighting what little crime takes place in sleepy border town Sommerton Junction. But that peaceful existence is shattered when Gabriel Cortez (Eduardo Noriega), the most notorious, wanted drug kingpin in the western hemisphere, makes a deadly yet spectacular escape from an FBI prisoner convoy. With the help of a fierce band of lawless mercenaries led by the icy Burrell (Peter Stormare), Cortez begins racing towards the US-Mexico border at 250 mph in a specially-outfitted Corvette ZR1 with a hostage in tow.
