Henri-Georges Clouzot‘s 1953 classic The Wages of Fear is about to get another remake, this time from Kill List director Ben Wheatley. The first film to draw inspiration from this intense and entirely ahead of its time thriller came in the form of William Friedkin‘s Sorcerer from 1977, a similar film in concept, but certainly one with its own voice. This makes both films stand on their own, and regarded by many (including myself) as masterpieces. Though I can re-watch Friedkin’s version over and over ad nauseam, you can’t beat that tar scene in Wages.
Deadline reports that, along with Wheatley directing, Amy Jump, Wheatley’s longtime collaborator and wife will be penning the script.
Normally I would scoff at the idea of this project, but I like the idea of this story being revisited every couple of decades by a new, talented director who will put their own unique spin on this tale of a group of men transporting truckloads of a volatile substance through the jungle.
