Channing Tatum Speaks About Possible Directorial Debut with ‘Magic Mike 2’

In a recent interview with German film site FilmStarts, Channing Tatum gave us a little more insight as to the plans for the sequel to this year’s Steven Soderbergh directed hit, Magic Mike. After the breakout critical and financial success of the film, the idea of a sequel was quickly being tossed around, not to mention plans for an upcoming Broadway adaptation.  Since Soderbergh announced a hiatus from directing after his next two films, The Bitter Pill and Behind the Candelabra, there’s a question of who will direct Magic Mike 2.While it’s obvious that the current focus is on the broadway show, Tatum expressed interest in the possibility of directing the film himself, or with the help of screenwriter and producer Reid Carolin.

As for the plot, Carolin says “You know, we are talking a lot about it. We have a story, and it is really ridiculous and fun. It’s a road movie sort of thing, where a bunch of strippers get back together. It’s more of a broad comedy. I don’t know whether it will happen or not.”

While I very much enjoyed the first film, the absence of Soderbergh for the second has me feeling very hesitant about this one. However, maybe Tatum picked up more than just acting lessons by working on three Soderbergh films, and he’ll surprise everyone again with his ability to direct.  Either way, we probably won’t see much movement on this until the Broadway show has been finalized.
