Chris O’Dowd Goes to Vietnam in ‘The Sapphires’ Trailer

While The Sapphires looks like your typical music-based comedy, there’s two big things it has going for it.  One is that Chris O’Dowd stars, and the second is that it was just nominated for 12 Australian Academy Awards.

The film revolves around a group of aboriginal singers that go to Vietnam to sing for the troops.  O’Dowd plays their feisty manager.  It got fairly high praise at TIFF and Telluride last year and is making its theatrical debut here in the States March 22nd. Hit the jump for the trailer and synopsis.

Gail, Cynthia, Julie and Kay are sexy, black, young and talented and they’ve never set foot outside Australia. Until, in the chaos of 1968, they’re plucked from the obscurity of a remote Aboriginal mission, branded as Australia’s answer to The Supremes, and grasping the chance of a lifetime, dropped into the jungles of Vietnam to entertain the troops.
