Weinsteins Regain Control Over Miramax, Plan SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE and ROUNDERS Sequels

Although Miramax is no more, its titles are about to get revived thanks to a new deal in which original founders Bob and Harvey Weinstein regain creative control. Deadline broke the news today that The Weinstein Co. signed a twenty year deal for the Miramax catalog that will span TV, film, and stage productions.

Some of the  projects they will be tackling first include sequels to Rounders and Shakespeare in Love, in addition to a Good Will Hunting and Swingers TV series- yikes.  Hit the jump for more.

When commenting on the Shakespeare in Love, here’s what Harvey Weinstein stated:

“I personally have never made a sequel, but I will make Shakespeare in Love as one. I’ve always wanted to do that and now we have the impetus to. There is so much intellectual property, and we’re in an age where, for however long it lasts, content is king.”

Here’s what he had to say regarding Rounders 2:

“I’ve discussed making Rounders 2 with Matt Damon and I would say that’s going to be instantaneous,” Weinstein continued. “The guys have a great idea, a way to make it more international where you start the card game in Paris, that’s all I want to say. There might be a certain beautiful Parisian actress involved in it, and then we’re off to the racetrack and Vegas with Matty and Edward Norton, and a new supervillain to replace John Malkovich.”
They are currently looking at Robert De Niro for that villain role.
What do you think?  Are you excited for any of this, or do you think this just means more unnecessary sequels in our near future?
