‘Y: The Last Man’ Gets Some New Writers

The film adaptation of Brian K. Vaughan’s amazing comic book series Y: The Last Man has been floating around Hollywood for several years now, but studios didn’t seem to know what to do with it.  A 60 issue series, the book would almost demand a trilogy, and that might be too big a gamble, considering the movie would most certainly require and R rating.

Y: The Last Man tells the story of a young man named Yorick, who wakes up one day to find that every male mammal on earth has mysteriously died, with the exception of himself, and his pet monkey, Ampersand.  Yorick and Ampersand then start out on a quest to find his girlfriend and family and let them know he’s alive, and to find out the cause of this phenomenon.

There has been some development on the project though, as New Line announced that they have a new writing team working on the script. Relative newcomers Matthew Federman and Stephen Scaia, who are also scripting the Sony Zorro reboot, are in final negotiations to take on the project.  Little is known at this point if they will stretch the story into multiple films, or if they’ll cut and cram the whole thing into one movie.  Let’s hope it’s the former, and they stick to the source material.

Personally, I feel this would work better as an HBO show, but who knows, maybe they’ll get it right.  Tell us what you think.
