FilmDistrict Picks Up Spike Lee’s ‘Oldboy’

Today, FilmDistrict has announced the acquisition of Spike Lee‘s upcoming Oldboy remake. While fans of the original are still scoffing at the idea of this, I’m hopeful that the solid director and great cast will make this a worthy translation of one of the best films to come out of South Korea. Read on for the full cast and official synopsis.
The cast is rounded out with Josh Brolin as the lead, with Elizabeth Olsen as his love interest, Sharito Copley is the villain, and Samuel L. Jackson is also featured in a supporting role. Here’s the full synopsis from the press release:

OLDBOY follows the story of an advertising executive (Josh Brolin) who is kidnapped and held hostage for 20 years in solitary confinement without any indication of his captor’s motive. When he is inexplicably released, he embarks on an obsessive mission to discover who orchestrated his bizarre and torturous punishment only to find he is still trapped in a web of conspiracy and torment. His quest for revenge leads him into an ill-fated relationship with a young social worker (Elizabeth Olsen) and ultimately to an illusive man (Sharlto Copley) who allegedly holds the key to his salvation.

So it seems there will be some changes from the original, let’s just hope it doesn’t hurt the overall tone and integrity of the story.

There’s currently no release date as of yet, but I would suspect sometime next year.
