In a recent interview with Kim Masters of KCRW’s The Business, Kevin Smith announced that he will not be utilizing crowdfunding in order to finance what is likely to be his final film, Clerks III.

Though he’s quick to point out that he isn’t against big campaigns like the recent Zach Braff project or Veronica Mars, he smartly notes that he has enough of his own money to fund the film if need be, and he doesn’t want to risk taking money from indie projects that need it more than he does. “I love the idea and I want to do it so desperately, but I think I’ve missed the window based on the fact that I do have access to money, so, if I jump out there, and I unleash this big fat Clerks III little wiener that I’ve got, and that soaks up $5-7 million in indie financing from the Kickstarter, Indigogo campaign, that’s a bunch of potential money that all these amateur Medici’s are not gonna throw toward somebody who really needs it.”

The script, shooting schedule, and budget proposal for the film has now been completed, and due to contractual obligations Smith must first present it to the Weinstein Co. who has first crack at it before looking elsewhere for financing.

Here’s hoping that everything comes together in time for Sundance 2014, which was the original goal. Listen to the full interview below:
