Jean-Pierre Jeunet has always been one of my favorite modern French filmmakers, with a unique visual style and an ability to tell incredibly interesting stories. His only foray into English-language cinema thus far has been Alien: Resurrection, which was definitely a slight misstep in his career (to put it lightly), however he’s back in the States, this time to adapt The Selected Works of T.S. Spivet by Reif Larsen.

The Young and Prodigious Spivet stars Helena Bonham Carter, Kathy Bates, Judy Davis, Callum Keith Rennie, and Dominique Pinon, with Kyle Catlett playing the title role. The film revolves around an intelligent, but peculiar boy leaving home in order to accept an award at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington.  Hit the break for more.

Judging from the trailer, it looks like it will retain that Juenet charm, and it will also be screened in 3D, which should add even more to the visuals.  The film opens in France this October, however there’s no set release date just yet in the US.

A 12-year-old cartography enthusiast in an eccentric family, who travels across country hidden on board a freight train after being invited to the Smithsonian Institute.
