There’s no nudity, no excessive violence, and the language wasn’t anything I would consider vulgar. Additionally, this theater regularly screens R-rated movies so what gives? On their Facebook page they also said, “None of the materials we received, or researched, noted drug use, strong language, and sex. So, yes, we have shown R rated films at the Panida but we were notified in advance and thus were able to notify our patrons in advance of content.”
Many are attributing this cancellation to the fact that two of the characters in the film are gay, including the film’s star Sophia Takal saying “They said it was due to content. They said it didn’t meet their theaters standards. They said there was drug use, sex and language and the movie was but should have been rated R. They’ve played R rated movies before and movies with drugs and violence, according to some Facebook comments. ‘Wild Canaries’ has no nudity, no sex scenes. It has two scenes where a guy is smoking marijuana. It has two lesbian main characters. It’s hard not to jump to the conclusion that that’s why they pulled it.”
I’m not going to jump to any conclusions about this, nor do I care about some prudish theater in Idaho, but if anything this will spark some more interest in seeking out Wild Canaries, as it’s a wonderful film and available to watch right now on VOD so check it out and try to figure out what all the fuss is about.
