Guillermo del Toro Enlists Charlie Kaufman to Pen SLAUGHTERHOUSE-FIVE

Fans shouldn’t get too excited just yet since this is still in very early development, but in today’s edition of the Daily Telegraph director Guillermo del Toro announced that he’s in talks with Charlie Kaufman to have him write the script for Universal’s Slaughterhouse-Five. Based on the novel by Kurt Vonnegut, the film is part of a four-picture contract del Toro signed with Universal.  In the interview he states:

“I love the idea of the Trafalmadorians to be ‘unstuck in time,’ where everything is happening at the same time. And that’s what I want to do. It’s just a catch-22.  The studio will make it when it’s my next movie, but how can I commit to it being my next movie until there’s a screenplay? Charlie Kaufman is a very expensive writer!”

The idea of del Toro and Kaufman collaborating on any project, much less a Vonnegut adaptation has me very excited.  Don’t hold your breath though, he’s got plenty on his plate to contend with before tackling this project, but we’ll definitely be keeping our ears to the ground.
