Today, Dreamworks has announced their acquisition of Classic Media and all their properties for the sum of $155 million. What is Classic Media, and what do they have worth that much? The answer is a very large catalog of classic cartoon franchises including Archie, Casper the Friendly Ghost, The Lone Ranger, Lassie, Rocky & Bullwinkle, Gumby, Underdog, Fat Albert, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Godzilla, He-Man, Dick Tracy, Frosty the Snowman, Mr. Peabody & Sherman, Where’s Waldo?, Postman Pat, and VeggieTales. While no one should care about some of these properties, there are quite a few in there that could make for some great Dreamworks animated films. I would particularly interested in seeing a new Dick Tracy film, possibly in the vein of Tin Tin, or an animated Fat Albert film.
I think it’s great that some of these classic characters are going to have some new life, as long as Dreamworks doesn’t forget about creating some original content as well.
