‘Hanna’ Scribe Set to Adapt ‘Shadow of the Colossus’

Good news for video game fans, it seems like there’s finally been some movement on the much anticipated Shadow of the Colossus film adaptation with the announcement of a new screenwriter. For those of you that aren’t up on your PS2 games, Shadow of the Colossus was a brilliant and beautiful game that came out way back in 2005, that featured a young man on a quest to bring his true love back from the dead by defeating a series of giants.  The art style and gameplay was like nothing we’ve ever seen before, and it almost begged for a film version immediately after its release.

Chronicle director Josh Trank picked up the film after the concept floated around Hollywood for several years, and today he announced that Seth Lochhead will be charged with writing the script.  Lochhead is a relative newcomer to the scene only having previously written 2011’s Hanna, but that isn’t what makes me apprehensive about the project.

There is so much potential here for a great film, but will the powers that be squander a good opportunity like they have so many times before with video game properties? The key to me seems like the filmmakers shouldn’t treat this as a video game converted into a film, but use the medium as a different kind of canvas to show us something truly artistic and wonderful.

We’ll certainly be reporting more on this movie as it develops.  Let us know what you think in the comments.
