Here’s the debut trailer for director Steve James‘ new sports documentary Head Games, which studies the growing concern of traumatic brain injury among athletes.  James previously directed Hoop Dreams, which is widely regarded as the best sports documentary ever made, and also directed last year’s The Interrupters, which was also met with critical praise. The film was inspired by, and features Christopher Nowinski, a former wrestler who dedicated his life to raising awareness, and furthering the study of sports-related brain injuries. The film’s title shares the same name as the novel authored by Nowinski as well.

Head Games is set to have a limited release in September, and will be distributed through Tugg, so you may start a campaign to get it released in your town.

HEAD GAMES contrasts eye-opening evidence and cutting-edge science on head trauma from the nation’s leading medical experts with first-hand accounts from athletes, coaches, and parents who share their personal struggles in dealing with the devastating aftermath of these injuries, while treading the difficult balance between sports excellence and basic self-preservation. Fueled by a ‘leave everything on the field’ culture, the devastating and long-term effects of this silent epidemic are only recently becoming clear.
