Working with legendary French singer and actor Johnny Hallyday, Vengeance audaciously mixes revenge with memory loss; Triad Election traces the complex loyalties of Triad gangs and the criminal promise of mainland China; and Mad Detective revels in the wacky side of the director with its goofy tale of a cop solving crimes through his multiple personalities.

Mad Detective — August 19
Triad Election — August 26

City Symphonies
The genre of the city symphony was ushered into glorious existence with Walter Ruttmann’s stunning Weimar-era documentary ode to Berlin. Different cities, though, demand different kinds of exploration. In addition to Ruttman’s poetic tribute, MUBI presents wildly inventive and divergent portraits of Los Angeles (by Thom Andersen), Macao (João Pedro Rodrigues, João Rui Guerra da Mata), and Winnipeg (who else but Guy Maddin?).

The Last Time I Saw Macao — August 27
My Winnipeg — September 3

Summer Favorite

Certified Copy — August 10
Starring the ever-radiant Juliette Binoche, Abbas Kiarostami’s Certified Copy is a beguiling, brain-teasing romance. As a deceptively simple relationship morphs into something more complex, it keeps you guessing at every turn.

Freedom & Defiance: The Cinema of Lou Ye — Exclusive
One of the foremost cinematic iconoclasts in contemporary China, Lou Ye’s films resist his native country’s moral and political criteria in the name of giving voice to the oppressed and those who choose to boldly defy the state. Previously banned from his country for five years for having confronted the subject of the Tiananmen Square protests in Summer Palace, Lou Ye has persisted onwards with a rare political bravery to express an always complicated cinematic vision of youth, romance and modernity in China and beyond.

Summer Palace — August 11
Love and Bruises — August 18
