Tarantino XX Blu Ray Review

With Quentin Tarantino entering his 20th year in filmmaking, and his latest movie Django Unchained coming out this Christmas, it seemed only fitting to release a collection of his up to date filmography in a nice box set.

This 10-disc Blu Ray set is simply a must-have for fans of Tarantino, and even if there’s a few of his films you aren’t in love with, this is still something worth having in your collection. This collection excels on every level, and contains everything you could want from a Blu Ray. Although this isn’t a Criterion release, it features all the great tropes that make a Criterion release so great. Here’s a breakdown of the set:

The Films

In this set you’ll get eight of Tarantino’s films- Reservoir Dogs, True Romance, Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, Kill Bill Volume 1 and 2, Death Proof, and Inglorious Basterds. Although he didn’t direct True Romance, it was one of the first films he wrote, so it was included in the set.

Each film gets it’s own Blu Ray, and is presented in glorious 1080p.  The transfers on each film look fantastic, although if you have any of these already in your collection, you won’t find a difference in the quality.

While I’m pleased with this collection as a whole, if you’re trying to get everything from Tarantino, it would have been nice to include Natural Born Killers, Four Rooms, From Dusk Till Dawn, and maybe some of his early unreleased films. As I’m not a huge fan of these films, I’m not missing them not being in this set.

The Special Features

The set is jam packed with special features, with over 15 hours of content, 5 of which is new to this release. In addition to special features for each film in the collection, one of the discs contains a retrospective titled Quentin Tarantino: 20 Years of Filmmaking, which takes an extremely in depth look at his career.

The Packaging

With original artwork by Mondo’s Ken Taylor, the packaging looks great.  On the back of the fold out case, there’s a great collage of characters from all the films, and all the Blu Ray menu animation is also done by Taylor.  The discs themselves are consistent with the style of the package, and each contain images of props from each respective film.

The Verdict

For $69.99 on Amazon, this set is a no-brainer for fans of cinema and Tarantino alike.  8 amazing films and 2 bonus discs make this a must have for your collection.
