So I begrudgingly went to see Men in Black III Thursday night, because I’m a good critic and I like to see everything, and the movie didn’t turn out to be that bad, but before the film started rolling, we were treated to a 7-minute trailer of The Amazing Spider-man.
Now, maybe this is cool for some people, but showing entire scenes from a movie in a trailer is entirely giving away too much. To say this spoiled the movie is an understatement. I feel as though I don’t even need to see the film now, since they thought it would be a good idea to condense the entire thing into a 7-minute short film.
I like trailers very much, but when I say trailer, I mean the nice little 2-3 minute versions that don’t give away huge plot points and story elements. A trailer should entice the audience into wanting more, not just give it all away in hopes that people will want to see an additional hour and a half of filler.
Earlier this year, I complained about the new trend of releasing teaser videos for trailer releases. While this is still ridiculous, it’s a minor annoyance compared to these extended, spoiler-filled versions.
Here’s an idea, if you want to release these, do it online. Make it available for someone if they choose to watch it. Don’t force it on us in a theater. Yes, I could have walked out of the screening until it was over, but I had my little snack area all set up, I was comfortable, and I probably would have heard it all anyway.
