In promotion of Bong Joon-ho‘s Snowpiercer hitting theaters in South Korea August 1st, an extended animated clip has been released that gives some backstory on how this dystopian future came to be.  The film is based on a French graphic novel by Jacques Lob and Jean-Marc Rochette, and tells the story of a world thrown into an ice age after an experiment to stop global warming fails miserably.  The only human life that remains are the travelers on the Snowpiercer, a train that circles the globe.

This will be Bong Joon-ho’s English language debut, having previously directed greats like Memories of Murder, The Host, and Mother.  The film stars Chris Evans, Song Kang-ho, Tilda Swinton, Jamie Bell, Octavia Spencer, Ewen Bremner, Alison Pill, John Hurt and Ed Harris.  There’s no US release date as of yet, so for now, hit the jump to check out the video and read the synopsis.

Snowpiercer is set in a future where, after a failed experiment to stop global warming, an Ice Age kills off all life on the planet except for the inhabitants of the Snowpiercer, a train that travels around the globe and is powered by asacred perpetual-motion engine. A class system evolves on the train but a revolution brews.
