Though I wasn’t the biggest fan of Steve McQueen‘s last film, Shame, I thought Hunger was fantastic and I’m still an admirer of his work.  His next film, 12 Years a Slave, tells the true story of Solomon Northrup, a free black man from New York, who gets kidnapped and sold into slavery for over a decade.

Boasting a huge and very impressive cast featuring Chiwetel Ejiofor,  Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, Paul Giamatti, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Dano, Sarah Paulson, Alfre Woodard, Dwight Henry, Quvenzhane Wallis, Lupita Nyongo, Scoot McNairy, Michael Kenneth Williams and Garret Dillahunt, this film looks to be a very emotional, powerful experience.  It’s going to be a surprise if this doesn’t end up nominated for some Oscars.

12 Years a Slave hits theaters December 27th, hit the break for the trailer and synopsis.

12 YEARS A SLAVE is based on an incredible true story of one man’s fight for survival and freedom. In the pre-Civil War United States, Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a free black man from upstate New York, is abducted and sold into slavery. Facing cruelty (personified by a malevolent slave owner, portrayed by Michael Fassbender) as well as unexpected kindnesses, Solomon struggles not only to stay alive, but to retain his dignity. In the twelfth year of his unforgettable odyssey, Solomon’s chance meeting with a Canadian abolitionist (Brad Pitt) forever alters his life.
