David Twohy‘s 2000 film Pitch Black proved to not only be a sleeper hit for the time, but also helped springboard the career of a then unknown Vin Diesel.  Though the character of Riddick wasn’t necessarily the focus of the film, he proved to be the star of the movie, and in 2004 Twohy made The Chronicles of Riddick.  This spinoff was a complete disaster, bombing at the box office and ripped to shreds by critics, however all was not lost for the shiny-eyed anti-hero.  After the success of a series of video games and a loyal fan-base, Riddick is ready to hit the big screen once again with a new film simply titled Riddick.

Rather than attempting to create this grand world full of politics and kid-friendly action, Twohy is taking the character back to his roots and making an R-rated sci-fi horror film that looks an awful like Pitch Black. While I’m definitely not holding my breath on this one, I’m still interested to see how it turns out. Here’s the trailer courtesy of Machinima:

Prepare for the latest chapter of the groundbreaking saga that began with 2000’s hit sci-fi film Pitch Black and 2004’s The Chronicles of Riddick.

The infamous Riddick has been left for dead on a sun-scorched planet that appears to be lifeless. Soon, however, he finds himself fighting for survival against alien predators more lethal than any human he’s encountered.

The only way off is for Riddick to activate an emergency beacon and alert mercenaries who rapidly descend to the planet in search of their bounty.
