Netflix has acquired the rights to The Irishman, which will be the ninth collaboration between Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro. Based on the 2004 book I Heard You Paint Houses by Charles Brandt, the project has been percolating for almost a decade. STX had purchased the rights for The Irishman last year and Paramount was set to distribute in the U.S., but there may have been issues with the underwhelming box office performance of Scorsese’s Silence.

The Irishman will likely start production later this year. The fact that we’ll be able to stream a Scorsese picture immediately upon release seems to be a big deal in predicting the future of distribution.
