Months ago, it was reported that The Weinstein Company planned on trimming 20 minutes from Bong Joon-ho‘s upcoming comic book adaptation Snowpiercer from the U.S. release.  Now, according to Deadline, an agreement has been met to screen the entire uncut version in the States, however now it will only get a “platform” release- meaning only in major cities and possibly VOD.  Read on for more.

Harvey Weinstein was concerned about the commercial appeal of the film, implying that most Americans wouldn’t “get” it so cuts were made.  There was also a push to add voiceover to the film, something I sincerely hope they did not do although the great Neil Gaiman was set to pen them.  The cuts would have effectively removed much of the character development, leaving the film more like a traditional science fiction actioner.

If it will, in fact, release on VOD I’m okay with that.  I’d rather watch the uncut version at home than some chopped up version at the multiplex, however it seems ridiculous that this is happening at all in the first place.  Does Snowpiercer seem like a movie that had any chance of reaching a wide audience to begin with?
