BEARS Blu-ray Review

I was already sold on Disneynature's Bears when the trailer featuring Phillip Phillips' song "Home" offered up a heartwarming overlay to the captivating shots of grizzly bears frolicking in the wild.

But from the moment I popped in the Blu-ray and hit 'play,' I was immediately reminded how impressive these studio documentaries truly are. Every scene was so perfectly framed; one could easily do a screen grab at any time, hit print, and produce a beautiful still image suitable for hanging on a wall.

MALEFICENT Review

Just when you thought you knew the story of Sleeping Beauty either from the original account or the 1959 Disney animated classic, Maleficent turns the fairy tale on its head and does so in a most unexpected way. I was not looking forward to seeing this movie from the trailer alone, and felt like I had seen this story before. What could be new and how laughable would Angelina Jolie be as Maleficent. Well, there are three main reasons to see this film: (1) Jolie’s performance in the title role, (2) some spectacular special effects, and (3) the surprising way in which the story unfolds which I did not see coming but which I admired. There is even some humor thrown in for good measure, something I was not expecting to see despite this being a Disney movie.

MILLION DOLLAR ARM Review

Although Million Dollar Arm is far from perfect, it’s a family-friendly film great for a rainy afternoon after the kids’ little-league game. The true-story-inspired plot revolves around the first two Indian Major League Baseball players (Rinku Singh and Dinesh Patel) and the ridiculous, yet successful publicity stunt that sports agent J.B. Bernstein (played by Mad Men’s Jon Hamm) orchestrated in 2008. Hamm brings his delicious suaveness to the silver screen as J.B., who is out of work and almost out of money and makes a major gamble with his career.
